IANS fell for a fake Twitter handle of Sachin Pilot's wife, Sara Pilot, and published a story based on it.
On July 16, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the Sattarghat bridge also known as Ramjanki path on Gandak River in the Gopalganj district. However, just 29 days after it was inaugurated, several media reports claimed that a part of the bridge on the Gandak River collapsed due to heavy rainfall.
Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav tweeted a video targeting the NDA government where he wrote, “The Sattarghat bridge of Gopalganj built at a cost of Rs 263.47 crore in 8 years, was inaugurated by Nitish Ji on June 16. Today, 29 days later the bridge collapsed. Beware! If someone terms it corruption by Nitish ji. Rs 263 crore is for just a glimpse. Even their rats consume alcohol worth this amount.”
Following this, a set of pictures in which the collapsed part of the bridge was seen, started doing rounds on social media with a claim that the bridge built in 8 years at a cost of Rs 263 could not survive for a month.
YouTuber Dhruv Rathee shared the viral images with the same claim.
Alt News Co-founder Mohammed Zubair also shared the same set of images saying 'this bridge was inaugurated exactly one month back.'
However, after the widespread claim Bihar Government's Minister Road Construction Department, Nand Kishore Yadav shared a video of the bridge and clarified the Sattarghat bridge has not been damaged, only an approach road of a minor bridge was damaged.
In a series of tweets, Yadav wrote, "The pressure of water in the Gandak river is more near Gopalganj. Due to this, the road portion of the bridge has been cut. This is caused by unexpected water pressure. This erosion has not damaged the structure of the small bridge. The main seventy ghat bridge, which is 1.6 km long, is completely safe."
The Bihar Government issued a government release saying, “The Sattarghat bridge has not been damaged, as nearly two km away from it, an approach road of an 18-m-long minor bridge was cut due to surging swollen waters in river Gandak…this has happened because of unprecedented pressure of water in the river…however, the structure of the minor bridge has not been affected. The main Sattarghat bridge is totally intact”. It was further added, “There is no issue of any misappropriation in this project…this is a natural disaster”.
In conclusion, the Bihar government refuted the reports of the Sattarghat bridge being washed away in floods.
